Significant other: an individual who has a very important influence on our lives. Generalized other: people who provide norms, values, attitudes, and expectations of people in general. Role taking theory: (cid:862)a (cid:272)hild"s a(cid:271)ilit(cid:455) to take the role of the generalized other is a step in the de(cid:448)elop(cid:373)e(cid:374)t of a self(cid:863) Examples: role model, pastor, stars, teachers, police, doctor process by which people learn the characteristics of their group: the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, norms, and actions thought to be appropriate for them. Although nature sets limits on what we can achieve, socialization plays a very large role in determining what we do achieve.
