An introduction to health psychology; chapter 16; pain. Acute pain: pain lasting less than three to six months. * chronic benign pain: similar degree over time. Pain is the number one reason to visit a doctor. Pain can have many effects on an individual and the environment of him/her. People can orginize their day around the pain. Lvls of depression are high among people with chronic pain. People who are already depressed focus more on pain so high lvls of reported pain. Pain restricts pattern of living so they get depressed. Another reaction to pain comes from the interaction with the environment. Primary (intrapersonal): occurs when expression of pain results in the cessation or reduction of an aversive consequence. Secondary (interpersonal): when behaviour results in positive outcome. Tertiary: feelings of pleasure that someone other than the individual in pain may experience when helping. Drug misuse as a result of over-medication in response to pain.
