BUS 17 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Motorboat, Intracerebral Hemorrhage, Peer Pressure
Document Summary
Chapter 5 traumatic brain: may result in cognitive and behavioral deficits, children younger than 3 years having the highest incidence of head injury. Impairments in information processing, attention, memory and learning: tbi refers to a traumatic insult of the brain, may producing brain damage associated with functional impairment. Direct result of force to the brain includes fractures, contusions, lacerations and diffuse axonal damage. Permanent and show little response to early treatment: secondary injuries. May include vascular disruption, which may lead to extradural, subdural and intracerebral haemorrhage. Secondary are more responsive to medical interventions: two major classes of tbi. Penetration of the skull by some form of missile , usually a bullet, rock, or knife. Damage usually localized around the path of the missile. Additional damage due to penetrating skull fragments or shattered fragments from the missile itself. Secondary damage may occur due to cerebral infection. Neurological deficits and post-traumatic epilepsy are frequently observed.
