Document Summary
Viktor shklovsky: deviation and defamiliarisation literature doesn"t differ in content matter but from everyday language: defamiliarised with everyday experiences. Roman jakobson: 6 functions of language: most important: poetic / aesthetic form, new criticism: Belief in objective, scientific method for reading, interpreting and teaching texts. Literature as conveyer of timeless and universal values (that"s why great literature stays relevant) Need to be placed and analysed in larger structures. Ferdinand de saussure: langue (literature as whole) and parole (individual text, signifier (sound image) and signified (concept in mind, binary oppositions: words gain meaning through relations to other words) Approaches: study position of texts in larger structure, study a specific text"s internal structure, study a text"s narratological features, poststructuralism. Deconstructive reading: reading against the grain, technique of deconstructing texts in ordert o expose gaps, conflicts, contradictions, paradoxes, disunity , similar to close reading but opposite aim. Jaques derrida: diff rance: no neat symmetry between signifier and signified, endless chain of signification.
