The role of the ep in the eu. The government and politics of the european union p. 201. Before it was the ep, it was known as the assembly of the european coal and steel community. The name european parliament" was adopted in 1962. The power of the ep is not as strong as national legislatures, but over the years it gained power (especially through the treaties after the maastricht treaty, task 1 / 2). The power of the ep is exercised in three main ways: legislative process, budgetary process, supervision of the executive p. 202. There are different ways for the ep to influence legislative output: participation in policy discussions with the commission (pre-proposal legislative stage). Example: nov. 2008 on strengthening equal pay law. Doesn"t happen a lot because of political reality. Absolute majorities (378 votes minimum) are hard to obtain: budgetary cycle. The ep can open new budget lines or create expenditure limits.
