Explain the role of effective communication and interpersonal interaction in a Health and
Social Care environment.
Communication is the process of sending or receiving messages between two or more
individuals. In this unit I will be understanding facts about different types of communication.
There are two different types of communications. They are verbal and non-verbal
communication. Effective communications are important because the individuals can be
obtained by spoken words or by other means. The ability to communicate effectively and
professionally is one of the most important skills that can be gained in Health and Social Care.
Context of communication
One to one communication is when you start a conversation with anyone, for example a
doctor might be joining a clinic today and communicating with patients for the first time. One
to one group communication is when a person has a face to face conversation with another
person. For example, when a person goes to a doctor to talk about his health. Formal
communication uses formal language or Standard English. It is when someone talks to
another person professionally, for example if a person is taking an interview by the manager.
Informal communication is when a person is talking to another person in slang. For example
a person might be having a casual discussion with their friend about something. It is also used
in e-mail, texts, telephone and conversations. Communication between colleagues is when
you’re co-operating with someone to finish your off your tasks. For example a person can
work with another person in a school or hospitals. Communication between professional and
people using services is when someone is advising or helping another person out in their
problem, for example when a doctor is talking to a patient. Communication between
professionals is when two people talk professionally about something relating to work, for
example a doctor can be talking to a nurse about a patient. Communication between multi-
agency workers is when someone is working and communicating informally with other
people, for example a teacher assistant in a school can work as well as talk informally with
other staff members. Communication between multi-professional workers is when
someone is working, but communicating formally with other people, for example a teacher
in a school can work as well as talk formally with other staff members.
Forms of communication
Verbal communication is when a person speaks to another person and then understand what
their talking about, this involves spoken language. Non-verbal communication is when
someone communicates without speech, for example using body language. A number of
features of speech can affect the quality and effectiveness of verbal communication. These
include tone and pace of a person’s voice. For example a person cannot shout, mumble, and
talk really fast or sound aggressive when having a conversation with a service user, their
friends, family or their colleagues. This is because speaking in this way will make them look
unprofessional and no one will listen to what they are trying to say. People can communicate
