Palpate the maternal hr so you know you"re listening to the fetal hr. Listen for 1 minute; if there is a contraction listen for 30 more seconds. An ultrasound device to detect fr and a pressure device to assess uterine activity. A fetal scalp electrode/internal scalp electrode that is applied to the presenting part of the fetus. Can pick up maternal hr if there isn"t a maternal hr. Monitor paper used for the electronic fetal monitor. Awhonn standards for frequency of assessment of fhr. Frequency of fhr assessment is based on: risk status, stage of labor, and ongoing clinical assessment. National institute of child health and human development (nichd) 10-15% of maternal cardiac output perfuses the uterus per minute. Primarily mediated by vagus nerve innervating sinoatrial and atrioventricular node of the heart.
