External: ultrasound: measures baby hr over the infant"s back, toco: over the fundus to measure frequency and duration of contractions. Not able to measure how strong the contraction is. Internal: fse (fetal scalp monitor): internally placed on infant"s scalp, breaking the skin which leaves a mark on the head once removed, iupc (intrauterine pressure catheter): fits along the side of the uterus to measure uterine contractions. Able to measure how strong the contraction is: internal monitoring devices are removed right before baby is born. Non-stress test: fetus with adequate oxygenation and intact cns will have accelerations in the heartbeat with fetal movement, may begin as early as 30 to 32 weeks gestation, done weekly or twice weekly until delivery, interpretation: Reactive: 2 accelerations over a 20 minute period.
