Psychology is the scientific study of mental processes (mind) and behavior. Scientific/empirical observation- knowledge comes from direct experience (science). -psychology has a long past but a short history!! -wilhelm wundt (leipzig, germany; 1879) father of modern day, scientific psychology. First to give lab in a university for psychology. First to study psychological phenomena with scientific method. -schools of thought-what and how a phenomenon is studied. Structuralism- to study conscious experience and it"s structure. Introspectrum--to look withinunderstanding knowledge for the purpose of knowledge. Goals: to describe organization of mental processes "the whole is greater than sum if it"s parts. " Wertheimer (whole is the movement, parts are the actual light turning on and off) Goals--explain personality and behavior and treating mental illnesses. Dream association: reoccurring dreams tell what it means. Goals--how the mind allows an organism to adapt to it"s environment. William jamesobsened animals & humansb/c complex organisms explain. Goals--study only observable behavior and explain via learning principles.
