Document Summary

2nd leading cause of death in u. s. (kills > 500,000 people / year). Your immune system is fighting cancer as we speak. If cells divide too rapidly and tumors get too large and interfere with function. Size is the big issue with tumors and the other issue is location. Can result from a mutation in 1 of 3 types of genes: proto-oncogenes , tumor- suppressor genes, and caretaker genes. Proto-oncogenes: normally promote cell division, but are changed into oncogenes by mutations that make the gene excessively active. Perfectly healthy, they tell our cells to divide. If they become active, they will divide too much. Mutations cause inactivation of these genes, allowing excessive cell division to occur. Code for proteins that tell your genes to stop dividing: there are many things that inactivate them. Normally protect genome: they fix mistakes and clean up messes. We are also exposing ourselves to toxins; these genes code for proteins that fix damaged dna.
