Groups are people who think of themselves as belonging together and interact with one another: determine who we are. Not groups: aggregate share same physical space but who do not see themselves together, category statistic, share similar characteristics. Group characterized by intimate, long-term, face to face association. Voluntary association mutual interests: politics, health, education, etc, common in the us. Key members (inner circle) of organizations often grow distant from regular members. Appoint other inner circle members to lead group. Oligarchy organization dominated by small, self-perpetuating elite: ex: us federal gvt. All supreme court justices went either to harvard or yale. In-groups loyalty: more likely to excuse faults and encourage to do better. Them and us division: lead to discrimination, hatred, and sometimes murder. Reference groups the groups we refer to when we evaluate ourselves. Groups you belong to and ones you don"t. Contradictions lead to inner turmoil due to social diversity. Social network people linked to one another.
