Take the place of nouns in a sentence. Descriptive words that modify verbs, adjectives, nouns, and adverbs. Expressions of emotions that aren"t related to the rest of the sentence. Based on the assumption that no one wants to read what you write: engage readers from the beginning to the end. Character: doer of the action, should be simple, concrete, and human. Clause must have subject and predicate: can stand alone as a sentence=independent clause, can"t stand alone=dependent clause. Phrase functions as grammatical unit, but does not have a subject and predicate. 4 types: simple sentence-single independent clause, compound sentence-two independent clauses + conjunction, complex sentence-independent clause and dependent clause + conjunction, compound complex sentence-two or more independent clauses and a dependent clauses. Capital letters: first word of a sentence, first word of direct quotes, pronoun i , proper nouns, titles, trademarks.
