Common themes of military history: no military decisions ever occur in a vacuum. It is never made strictly off of military efftcs ie. economic, social: american defense policy is traditional based off of pluralistic institutions. Military is made up of professional and citizen soldiers which effects public opinion and attitudes: america is usually not totally prepared for war, despite a peace time marine corps. Policy making has done a good job protecting us during peace time. Distance from major enemies has helped americas mobilization stance: civilian military conflict. The president has significant power in commanding the armed forces but congress decides whether or not to fund all of the president"s ideas. Congress has power to declare war but hasn"t in modern era, only president has sent troops: steady increase over time of professionalizing armed forces. Throughout our history, the military has grown into an increased role in our government financially and professionally.
