MC 2000 Lecture : MC 2000 Sep 3 Notes
Document Summary
September 3rd lecture: lippmanns ideas about stereotypes: generalized way of thinking the pictures in your head when you think about something, the stereotype is your expectation of something. When it goes against expectation our ideas change about that stereotype or they adjust to that specific instance. We need to recognize that we make stereotypes in order to see individuals differently. Focus on connection between stereotypes, single story, priming, and framing: framing vs. Framing: tries to manipulate our viewpoint before we even have one. Agenda setting: media gives you what to think about but not what you should think about it. Its always hard to find the alternative perspective. Don"t notice it unless you"re looking for it. The bias is there (inside your mind) that you"re not aware of. It"s for ratings: you"ll remember examples more than stories, ex: media story presenting statistics you will remember crime not the facts of it.
