Crime you"re punished, deviance is di erent type of punishment. Some rules are informal. (don"t cut in line, ask woman her age). Others speci ed by the state, don"t steal don"t murder. Some acts of deviance are speci ed by the state called crimes. Some laws because of deep consensus-everyone agrees on it. Group con ict- two or more groups ghting it out over some issue. One who wins is the strong one, well funded, more power, not about who is right but who is more powerful, organized. Example: gay marriage, gun control, abortion, marijuana, smoking. Laws against a subject can re ect the group of users. Such as middle class white woman used to use coke but no laws because they were not a threat. People who engage in the scienti c study of crime with emphasis on establishing relationships between major social variables. His job is to relate one variation to another and explain the variation.
