September 5th
Assessing Information Systems
In order to assess the success of departments, projects and initiatives, organizations use key
performance indicators, or KPIs
Measures
oE.g. “Store X sold Y items”
Metric
oQuantifiable measures used to gauge performance
KPI – Key Performance Indicator
oA measurable value that demonstrates how well an objective is being achieved
oEvery KPI is metric, but not every metric is a KPI (not every metric is a Key Performance
Indicator)
Benchmark
oValue representing the point of reference for evaluating performance or level of quality
oCan represent standard value, optimal value, target value
Chosen KPIs should be:
oAligned – reflecting strategic goals and objectives
oAttainable – measured based on the data that can be obtained in straightforward
manner
oAccurate – Accurate data + calculations
oActionable – giving insights that can prompt action
A single KPI is rarely fully indicative
Combination of KPIs more precise picture
KPI examples
oUniversity KPIs
4 year graduation rate, acceptance rate, enrollment rate, retention rate, job
placement rate, average first year salary
oRetail KPIs
