Document Summary

Lecture 2: determining between strains vs species, strains. Staphylococcus epidermidis and staphylococcus aureus are the same species just different strains. Similar to beagle and lab, they"re both the same species, just different strains. All members of this genus have some shared characteristics. Some microbiologists argue that there are 3 strains of 1 species. They are opportunistic bacteria (attack when the opportunity is present, like a weak immune system) There are 2 very virulent family members: 2. anthracis - toxin kills cattle & humans. 2/3 have identical 16s rrna genes, other has 1 difference. Each cell has 80 bullet shaped magnetosomes. An example of an endospore: clostridium difficile. Anything with the name clostridium are bacteria that produce endospores. Endospores from bacteria cannot be treated by antibodies unless they are active. Dormant cell type, but it activates when sunlight is present. Filled with food reserves: heterocysts (*look at book for better explanation*) Produced by some cyanobacteria that can fix nitrogen.
