Document Summary

Harvests energy by oxidizing glucose to pyruvate. 2 atp consumed, phosphate added to glucose, energy stored in 6 carbon sugar. Breaks 6 carbon sugar into 2 3 carbon molecules of g3p. No energy invested, energy of the organism used. Transfer phosphate group from an organic molecule (substrate [pep]) to adp, forming. Occurs both in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. Not the same as chemiosmotic coupling in photosynthesis. 2c acetyl fragment, now part of acetyl-coa. The coa group is removed from acetyl coa and the acetyl is attached to oxaloacetate to form citric acid. Series of steps release 2 co2, 1 atp, 3 nadh, 1 fadh2. Oxaloacetate is regenerated starting the cycle again. Nadh or fadh2 donate electrons at complexes 1 and 2. H+ moves across membrane at 1, 3, and 4. As h+ moves back into the matrix, atp is synthesized by chemiosmotic. Nadh generates equivalent of 3 atp, fadh2 generates 2.
