Imitation, memory, and thought development: recognize object permanence, beginning of goal-directed actions. Preoperational (2-7 years: language acquisition and use, symbolic thinking, logical reasoning, egocentric, lack concentration. Concrete operational (7-11: solve logical problems through manipulation, laws of conservation, understand reversibility. Formal operational (11- adult: abstract thinking, scientific reasoning, social, multi-layered, complex thinking. Human activity occurs within a cultural setting and cannot be understood apart from this setting. Sociocultural theory: emphasizes the role in development of dialogue between children and more knowledgeable members of society. Children learn the culture of their community though these interactions. Cultural tools play very important role in development. Language is important because it provides a way to express ideas and questions. Area where a child cannot solve a problem alone, but can be successful under adult guidance or in collaboration with a more advanced peer. May have overemphasized role of social interaction.
