Age to get married is increasing (marital delay) The make up of families is changing. Increase in nonmarital cohabitation: from 1970-now = 10 fold increase, precedes more than 50% of first marriages. In 1970 median age for first marriage; w=21, m=24: in 2017 w = 27, m=29. In us, there are 74 million children under age 18: about 25% of our population. 64% of children live with 2 parents. About half of children will live in a single parent household at some point. About 16 million (22%) of children live in poverty. Us census defines family as a group of two or more people related by birth, marriage and/or adoption and residing together in a household (people with pets, foster parents, and cohabiters don"t meet this definition) Structure vs. function: functions: economic support, protection, education, religious guidance, recreation (children learn through playing), affection, procreation, prestige.
