Document Summary

Earthquakes a natural phenomenon usually caused by the rupture (movement) along a fault. Fault a fracture within the earth, across which sliding and displacement occur. The earths crust can only bend so much until it ruptures and forms a fault. Which generates an earthquake and releases seismic energy. The crust gradually accumulates stress (forces) causing strain (deform) Once the crust reaches its yield strength, it ruptures, forming an earthquake: the process starts again. Strike slip faults: left lateral, right lateral.
