GLG 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Suspended Load, Silt, Cut Bank
Document Summary
Water: all the water on the earth makes up the hydrosphere. Hydrologic cycle the unending circulation of the earth"s water supply that is powered by solar energy. Drainage basin the area of land that contributes water to a river system. Streamflow 2 ways: laminar flow flowing water that parallels the channel, turbulent flow water flowing in an erratic unpredictable fashion. Erosion streams are most important agents of erosion. Streams ability to carry solid particles is described using 2 criteria: Capacity the maximum amount of solid particles a stream can carry. Competence the maximum particle size a stream can transport. Dissolved load smallest stream load composed of sediment and chemicals in solution (dissolved) Suspended load particles of silt and med and clay foumd suspended within the water column. Bed load the larger portion of a streams load found along the bottom of the streams channel.
