Britain was the creditor to the world in 1914, but during the war they had to trade away the wealth that had accumulated over centuries. An uglier world: life and politics as trench warfare. Security fears and nationalist passions= political and economic nonsense. Can see this in the policy followed by the french. Germany is the economic engine that runs the european economy even until this day. French policy delayed german economic recovery, which delayed european recovery.
