KNH 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Renal Cortex, Hypothalamus, Metabolic Waste
Document Summary
Kidneys are the size of your fist. Cannot exist more than a few days without proper functioning. Filters 200 quarts (50 gallons) of fluid (blood and particles) per day. Adrenal gland: on top of the kidney. Renal medulla: holds the nephrons, working parts of the kidney. Kidney: bean shaped organ at lower end of spinal cord. Renal artery: brings fluid from heart to be filtered by the kidney. Renal vein: takes filtered blood from the kidney, back to the heart. Ureter: tube from kidneys to bladder, transports waste. Urethra: tube that drains the urine for excretion. Albumin creatine ratio: measures the excess protein in the urine, large protein molecules pass through the tubules because of being damaged from high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high sodium levels, other toxins. Risk factors for kidney disease (e. g diabetes, high blood pressure, family history, older age, ethnic group) Kidney damage with mild loss of kidney function.
