Escapism (sense of escape for indian people from poverty usually and encourages imagination) A musical is a film that features song and dance numbers. Implications: a ton of songs produced each year. Indian flavor always present (melodic style; languages; instruments) Borrowing from other musical traditions (african, caribbean, asian) Most bollywood actors don"t sing their own songs. Instead, songs are pre recorded and the actors lip-sync. Artists who record songs are known as playback singers. People go to the movies as much for the music (and even for the particular singer featured) as they do for the stories or actors.
