POL 271 Lecture Notes - Lecture 36: Economic Warfare, Total War
POL 271 Lecture 11/28/16 Total Warfare
Total Warfare
Fidel Castro’s death will have no effect on the international arena.
-Castro gave up power years ago and Cuba doesn’t matter anymore.
Total Warfare: a situation in the international arena where neither side has any restriction. Both
sides are fighting for victory and subjection.
Total warfare is possible because…
-They have differing belief systems.
+People will only sacrifice themselves if they think it is for a larger cause.
+One belief is often a strong devotion to one’s country.
-Social organization
+the ability of the government to get its populace to do what it wants i.e. the draft.
+Developing countries do not have adequate social organization.
-Social organization and beliefs are intertwined.
In total war, civilians are targeted.
-Example: Hitler’s bombing of London and other cities.
-This can make civilians even more resistant and determined which is the opposite of the
intended effect.
-Civilians are targeted to hurt morale.
-Also, civilians are targeted because they are defense workers and killing them hurts
supply chains.
-Also, civilians are targeted because they can’t be conscripted if they’re dead
In Economic warfare, you’re attempting to cripple your enemy’s economy.
-If the economy is crippled then the war machine is crippled.
+Example: The British dispatched purchasing agents to buy all the natural
resources they could find to take them from the Germany.
-Sometimes navies mount a blockade to stop all trade with the enemy.
