POL 271 Lecture Notes - Lecture 40: Maginot Line, Railway Electrification System, Salami Tactics
Document Summary
Germany became revisionist after world war i because of a lot of the parts of the treaty of. Germany had to be coerced, so someone had to enforce the treaty. The treaty could have been enforced if france, great britain and the united states stuck together. Great britain pretty much dropped out of the treaty and the united states didn"t ratify the treaty which left france as the sole enforcer. France didn"t have the ability to control germany. The french population was much smaller than germany"s. The population didn"t grow between 1920 and 1940. France"s government was too divided to actually guide france in a foreign policy direction. Parliament had coalitions that changed way too many times. This resulted in the french military having no leadership and aging inept generals. The french didn"t have a good defense plan. They needed an adequate ally but couldn"t fine one in any of the strong european powers.
