Example: crime continues to be covered by media drowning out other issues reflecting on mayors and elected officials causing candidates 1996 clinton to talk a tough game on crime to get elected. Example: carter vs. reagan 1980 election: internationally carter had blundered and made the us look weak, Carter focused on domestic issues instead of international to draw attention away from his failings. Carter was winning with this tactic: iranians were willing to negotiate hostages with carter; carter stopped campaigning and went to focus all energy on iranian hostages because if he won he would win president. Regan changed emphasis to international issues changing the publics view on carter to incompetent. Media focuses strictly on the candidate and its platform not their respective party.
