POL 271 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Monroe Doctrine, Isolationism, Autarky
Document Summary
The united states has natural frontiers that provide great protection. There are massive mountain ranges, but its large oceans are its biggest protectors. The united states was mainly focused on the western hemisphere because european nations were the only possible threats. Natural security allowed the united states to try an experiment with weak government. They implemented a government with divided and separated power with constitution. Gave more authority to the states at first but some powers of the federal government were denied to the states. This system of government led to a lot of weakness and confusion in government so very little has gotten done. If the united states could"ve been invaded at that time, then the government would"ve been much stronger. Isolationism has been a part of the united states foreign policy since the inception of the constitution. Geography meant world affairs really didn"t affect the united states.
