Randomly assigned mit grad students to rooms. 2/3 of participants had best friends on the same floor. Works in classrooms, college dorms, workplace, etc. We tend to like those who are familiar to us. We tend to be attracted to those who are similar to us. Finding: beliefs about partner"s liking affects your attitudes and behavior. High anxiety = want to wait with others. Low anxiety = want to wait alone. Humans evolved to select makes that solve adaptive problems". Goal of mate selection = successful offspring. Seeks to explain features of valued mates. Assumes selection pressures exerted on evolutionary ancestors. Predicts men and women want different things. Adaptive problems" faced by men + women. A person"s cl alt is set at best perceived relationship outcomes outside of the current relationship. When current outcomes slide below cl alt, instability increases. Perceptions of partners cl alt influence our behavior. Cost of leaving relationship is part of cl alt.
