Chapter 8: social and emotional development throughout early childhood. Initiative versus guilt: having a healthy sense of purposeless, not a strict conscious, build a house out of blocks, take initiatives to do things on their own, negative side: feel guilty to do things due to past experiences. Child is trying to figure out if they can successfully interact with the world: good parents: let their child make their own decisions, bad parents: make their child"s decisions for them. Self understanding: begin to somewhat figure out who they are, i self: understanding that you have your own thoughts. Child steps away from egocentric type thinking: me self: child begins to understand their roles in life. Self concept: set of attributes, set of abilities, set of attitudes, and values that starts to define who that child is, preschoolers have very simple self concepts. Can say name, physical traits, everyday things, and by 3. 5yrs old they can describe emotions.
