11/8 Notes: Making a Living • Subsistence Strategies: ◦ Foraging ◦ Horticulture ◦ Agriculture ◦ Industrialism • Foraging: ◦ “Hunter gatherers” ◦ Gendered critique changed the “hunter gatherer” name ◦ They didnt develop agriculture because it was easier to gather then till soil, and they didnt have the right environment for agriculture. ◦ It is not okay to say they did not develop agriculture because they didnt learn ◦ Agriculture was independently learned all over the world • Foraging way of Life ◦ !Kung San ◦ 20 hours a week looking for food ◦ 3 hours a week for tools ◦ 19 hours a week working on the house ◦ Usually women gather and men hunt however, they have highly flexible gender roles ◦ In general, food is shared • Foragers and Stratification ◦ Egalitarian societies- there is no hierarchy ranking ◦ This is the oldest, “original” way of life so foraging plays a special role in anthropology • Horticulturalists ◦ Simple Cultivation uses less intense labor and less technology ◦ W
