Document Summary

Elements made of the same kind of atom. Compound is made of two or more elements. Observed without changing a compound/element into something else. Ex. boiling point, density, mass, volume, etc. Observed when compound/element changes into another compound/element. Ex. flammability, corrosiveness, reactivity with acid, etc. Independent of the amount of matter that is present. Changes that do not change the composition of the substance. Ex. changes of state, temp, volume, etc. **chemical reactions combine substances to form compounds or break down compounds. Responsible for most fertilizer used in the world. *once you have ammonia, you can make all kinds of n-containing compounds. Distillation- separates homogenous mixture (based on differences in boiling point) Chromatography- separates homogenous mixture on the basis of differences in solubility in a solvent, or in binding to a solid matrix. Temperature = avg. kinetic energy of particles in a sample. Round at the end, keep all numbers through calculations add/subtract: round to least significant decimal place.
