Establishment of departments and levels of management are required due to: span of management control issues. Situations that require careful supervision require a narrow span of management. More empowered employees allows the span to broaden, requiring fewer managers: factors include; complexity, variety and proximity of the jobs as well as manager ability. Acceptance authority is effective only if the employees are being directedo zone of acceptance range of perceived duties: authority of competence or expertise. Commonly organized by: function production, sales and finance, product or service more common in diverse corporations, geography regional areas, customer schools, business, healthcare, process, equipment or time production unit or shif. Line position position in the direct chain of command, responsible for the organization"s goals: procurement, production and service managers. Staff position provides expertise, advice and support to the line positions: human resources, accounting, technology, administrative intensity degree of staff position concentration.
