Three general characteristics of conflict: incompatible goals, interdependence of parties, communication. Conflict is pervasive in all societies and in relationship development. Our view of conflict and our conflict management styles are culture bound - influenced by our culture. Because culture acts as a guide and predictor of communication behaviors, conflict in intercultural settings needs to be viewed in terms of culture and communication. Conflict permeates the development of social relationships at different levels: interpersonal, intergroup, interorganizational, international. Refers to the incompatibility of goals, interests, resources, values, expectations, processes, our outcomes between 2 or more interdependent parties from different cultures.
