Settlement patterns seem to concentrate in certain regions/cities. *chinese exclusion act (1882): effectively ended all chinese immigration for more than 60 years. *national origin system (1921): reduced overall immigration & significantly reduced likely immigration from greece & italy. *immigration and nationality act (1965; hart-cellar act): facilitated entry of skilled workers/relatives of us residents. *immigration reform and control act (1986): modest reduction of illegal immigration. *illegal immigration reform and immigrant responsibility act (1996): greater border surveillance and increased scrutiny of legal immigrants seeking benefits. Occurred because of increased anti-immigration sentiment and ww i. Canada, mexico, central and south american immigrants unrestricted. Primary source of immigrants included italy, greece, portugal, mexico, philippines, west indies. Brain drain / pop growth / mixed status / english language acquisition / illegal immigration. Mixed status families: families where one or more members are us citizens and one or more are non-citizens.
