The term arab americans refers to the immigrants and their descendants from the countries that now makeup the arab world. 22 nations of north africa and what is the middle east including. Arabic language is the single most unifying force among arabs. Rising populations has led to the development of arab centers in several cities. Muslims make up 23% of the population. Muslims do vary in their interpretations of several traditions. Taken by muslims to refer to their internal struggle for spiritual purity. Begins in the 17th century when members of a muslim tribe were brought to the american colonies. Difficult for a collective muslim group to survive slavery. Malcolm x, fought for black rights, converted over to islam. Arabs made a dramatic impression at a series of world fairs. World war i slowed the movement to the us. Pressure to assimilate caused many to try and reduce the differences between themselves and host country.
