KIN 125 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Abdominal Thrusts, Straddle, Bag Valve Mask
Document Summary
Common causes: airway obstruction, asthma, allergies, chest injuries, illness. The first aid procedures necessary to sustain life in emergency situation: check. Adult: gently tap shoulder and ask loudly, are you okay, look for any type of response. Infant: flick the bottom of infant"s foot. Victim is in supine position on a hard surface. Two techniques: chin life/head tilt, jaw thrust maneuver. When cervical injury is not suspected: place the tips of the fingers underneath their jaw, put other hand on their forehead. Apply firm pressure: bring chin forward. Support the jaw and tilting head backward: lift the chin so teeth are nearly brought together. Use your thumb to keep the mouth slightly open. Should be utilized in 2 scenarios: head tilt/chin lift is unsuccessful, if spine injury is suspected. Grasp the jaw bone on both sides: near the angles leading toward the victim"s ears. Retract the lower lip with thumb if the lips close.
