Document Summary

Metabolism: the chemical processes that occur in a cell. Anabolic reactions (anabolism): chemical reactions in which energy is stored in molecules. Catabolic reactions (catabolism): chemical reactions in which energy is released from molecules. Oxidation: a chemical process in which a substance loses electrons. Reduction: a chemical process in which a substance gains electrons. Electron acceptor molecule: accepts electrons temporarily until they move along to the next accept molecule. Electron transport chain: the shuttling of electrons from one acceptor to another. Electromagnetic spectrum: continuous range of electromagnetic radiations propagated through space and matter. Wavelength: the distance from one wave peak to the next. Mesophyll: a layer within the cell with many air spaces and a high concentration of water vapor. Carotenoids: accessory pigment that is yellow and orange which absorbs wavelengths of light different from absorbed by chlorophyll, thereby expanding the spectrum of light that provides energy for photosynthesis.
