We are selecting drug resistant bacteria in ourselves. Antibiotics aren"t as effective as they used to be. We have selected those few bacteria that already were resistant. 1)among lots of microbes, a few are resistant to a drug. 2)antibiotics kill illness causing bacteria plus good bacteria that protect the body from infection: the drug-resistant bacteria now have a chance to grow and take over. People who are infected with the tuberculosis (tb) bacterium are given the antibiotic rifampin and told to continue its use for 6-9 months. It takes that long for the antibiotic and the patient"s immune system, working together, to completely wipe out the infection .
