C_S_D 4340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Induction Loop, Public Address System, Assistive Technology
Document Summary
Assistive technology for the hearing impaired, continued. Alds: assist in overcoming the negative effects of, distance, noise, reverberation, improve signal to noise ratio (snr) Signal transfer method: hardwired, wireless, induction loop, infrared light, fm broadcast. Hardwire devices: physical connection between listener and sound source. Basic components: amplifier, microphone, earphone, advantages, portable, lightweight and inexpensive, disadvantages, limited by length of wire, sound quality may not be good, mostly used for personal ald"s. In past many facilities like churches had hardwired headset connections but have to sit in certain places, wear bulky headsets. Now wireless is cost-effective: may have longer cord for microphone, jack for tv or other audio equipment, highly portable, but limited ability to move once device is in place. Think of ways you might use this: have one in place in case someone doesn"t have a hearing aid or theirs is not working, hospitals, etc. Components: microphone and/or other audio source and a loop amplifier connected to a wire.
