PSYCH 2810 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Labiaplasty, Labia Majora, Mons Pubis
Document Summary
Galen, 2nd century ad, women have the parallel anatomy as men. 7 weeks gestation- male and female have the same genitalia. External genetalia: mons pubis: fatty covering of tissue (and hair) that protects genitalia, pubic hair: provides a cushion and repels dirt from the vestibule. Removal increases risk of abrasions and skin infections. Intact hymen is a signal of virginity but it isn"t necessarily true: hymen is highly variable in structure. There are cases of women reaching puberty with enclosed vaginas. Requires surgical removal: hymen is the cherry , approximately 40-45% of women bleed after first sexual encounter. Vagina is the birth canal, but our generation calls the vulva the vagina. When a woman is aroused, the clitoris becomes erect (internally) The shaft also becomes erect to allow the clitoris to be stimulated. There"s a mucus plug across the cervix (os) except during fertile periods.
