Important that everyone in the puritan society conforms b/c they need to stay united in their mission. Holy watching: keeping a very close eye on each other in the community. Whoever lived closest to the church and the meeting house had the highest status in the community. Only male members of the puritan church could be politicians. Material success was a sign of god"s blessing . Puritans believed in pre-destination : certain people go to heaven, and have already been chosen. Everyone lived very close together: this made farming land outside of town. Half-way covenant (1662): you can become a member of the church if your parents are members. Partible inheritance: land goes to sons, money and household goods go to daughters. Family is the building stone of the society. Commonwealth: families should be a mini reflection of the whole society, called little commonwealth : microcosm: mini version of a larger society.
