Document Summary
1619- dutch ship showed up to jamestown with cargo full of african slaves: initially made indentured servants, not slaves, some africans survived their indenture, and went on to own land. Symbology of color: to the europeans, white = pure, innocence, holy, and black = sin. Dirty, death: europeans were predisposed to the ideas of what white and black mean, which created slavery and then institutionalized racism. Slavery evolved in stages: some status of slavery was flexible (1619-1640"s, some slaves were being held for life (1640"s-1661, virginia was the first to legalize slavery (1661) Not everyone switched to slavery immediately because most servants weren"t surviving their indenture, and owners could pay less for a servant and never have to give them anything. African women were put in the field as well, with the men. Black codes: laws that were designed to begin the process of turning.
