England was not a powerful nation during the 16th century. Irish considered to be savages and were compared to the american indians. Proprietary colonies: royal grant giving exclusive rights to recipient. Established first colony in attempt to establish a base to raid spanish ships. 2nd colony with around 100 settlers including families resettled the island. Original 15 are gone and only skeleton discovered. When ships return in 1590, colony had disappeared. Royal colony- a colony owned and directed by the crown or its direct representatives. Charter colony- a colony granted to a company with multiple investors. Proprietary colony- a colony with exclusive rights granted to one individual often at his own expense. First permanent settlement established in jamestown, va in 1607. Established as a charter to the virginia company. English came to the realization that mining would not sustain the colony. In combination with john rolfe- gradually but significantly changed the culture in jamestown.
