Environmental science is the systematic study of our environment and our proper place in it. Environmental science is not environmentalism: activism, social movement to protect the natural world. Health: incidence of life-threatening diseases has been reduced in most countries. Resource use: tropical forest destruction has slowed & habitat protection has improved in some areas. Renewable energy: progress is being made in the transition to renewable energy sources. Carbon markets: cap-and-trade programs help limit greenhouse gas emissions. International cooperation: some international environmental protection agreements have been highly successful, while others lack enforcement. Historical perspective on our relation to the environment (over time there were 4 stages) Each era focused on different and problems and each suggested a distinctive set of solutions. We can trace much of the modern- day environmental movement to these historical perspectives.
