Chapter 14 - NOTES
Water Resources-
Why is water so important?
71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water
water makes up 60% of trees
animals are made up of 50-65% of water
humans need 12 cups of water a day to survive
water supplies many of our needs and wants
water:
moderates climate
sculpts earth’s surface
dilutes pollutants
Important properties of water:
strong forces of attraction between water molecules
water exists as a liquid over a wide temperature range (b/c of ^)
liquid water changes temperature slowly b/c it stores heat
it take a lot of heat to evaporate liquid water b/c of strong attraction
liquid water can dissolve a variety of compounds
water molecules can break down into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions
water filters out wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation
liquid water can contact, adhere to and coat a solid
water expands when it freezes
How much freshwater is available-
97.4% of water on earth is too salty to drink
the remaining 2.6% is:
locked in ice caps
groundwater that is too deep to reach
only .014% of water is usable
soil moisture
groundwater
water vapor
lakes and streams
available amount is generous
as population, irrigation, and industrialization increase, water shortages in already
watershort areas will intensify
Surface Water-
Surface runoff- precipitation that does not infiltrate the ground or return to the
atmosphere by evaporation
flows into streams, lakes, wetlands, and reservoirs
⅔ of earth's runoff is lost by seasonal floods

Strong forces of attraction between water molecules. Water molecules can break down into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions. Water filters out wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation liquid water can contact, adhere to and coat a solid. 97. 4% of water on earth is too salty to drink the remaining 2. 6% is: locked in ice caps. Groundwater that is too deep to reach. As population, irrigation, and industrialization increase, water shortages in already watershort areas will intensify. Surface runoff- precipitation that does not infiltrate the ground or return to the atmosphere by evaporation flows into streams, lakes, wetlands, and reservoirs. Of earth"s runoff is lost by seasonal floods. Reliable runoff- the remaining of earth"s surface runoff.
