Lecture 11
Doric Order
- We want to analyze what the people then would have though of the art and architecture
- Spartans make conscious decision to stop making art, because they had to put all of their
energy into keeping their slaves in control and keeping their land
Temples
- The temple’s purpose was not to prepare the person during the response, it was rather to
house the cult image
- It was a place where one could communicate with the divinity
- Thus they build the temple around the altar (the altar is at right angles with the temple),
facing inwards into the presence of the divinity
- We can see this by the locations that we have found, e.g. the Mycenaean ruins
Choosing the location
- Based on the nature of the divinity
- At extremes
- Beautiful places - naturally monumental
- Surrounded by landscape (rugged, unique features)
- Recognizable from a distance
- Greece - known for juxtaposition of rock structures and water
- They must have felt very insignificant in the middle of the landscape, especially
in Greece
Greek city states
- Small geographical areas, defined by their natural boundaries
- In this context, democracy begins
Temple of Hera Akraia
- Built at the extreme end of the peninsula, visible looking from Corinth across to
Perachora
- Named “Akraia” (point, sharp) because of the view from Corinth
- Hera got her name from there “Hera Akraia”
- Conception of a divinity directly related to her or his location in the landscape
Early Temples
- Rubble base
- Thin walls (purpose is not to support the light roof, but rather to house the cult image)
- Vetruvius - from 1st century B.C. Rome

We can see this by the locations that we have found, e. g. the mycenaean ruins. Based on the nature of the divinity. Greece - known for juxtaposition of rock structures and water.
