Lecture 17
Specific themes and forms of analysis
- Continuation through rediscovery of Mycenaean culture
- Monuments of the Mycenaeans and later Greeks are monumental in similar ways
Ionia
- On the West coast of Asia Minor
- Spoke the Ionian dialect of Greek
- Athenians are the only mainland Greeks to speak the Ionian dialect. Thus is it no surprise
that the Ionians and the Athenians always team up
- This is an important aspect of the identity of the Athenians
- They are connected ethnically and politically with the Greeks of Asia Minor
Doric Order (vs) Ionic Order
- Seem pretty similar from this view
- Both have 3 steps, both have fluted columns (20 flutes vs 24 flutes), both have
capitals (one curls over, the other does not), both capitals have echinus and
abacus, both have architrave (one has three layers), both have frieze above (one
has triglyphs and metope (with small composition in the metope), while the other
has processional art)
- The problem is that this view does not tell us about the scale, the plan, or the
locations of these temples
Samos
- Memorial of Hera
- By 7th century B.C., there is definitely a temple to Hera
- The town and the temple are far apart
- There is a paved road with memorials along the way that serves to condition the approach
from very far off.
Ionic
- The plan of Ionic is very different from that of Doric
- There are three different ‘stages’ in this temple development
- 1) It is simply a long simple building with columns down the middle inside so as
to support the roof
- From around 650 B.C.
- We don't have the roof tiles
- 2) In 600 B.C., a colonnade is added, the interior columns are removed
- The columns on the outside give the effect of permeability
