Chapter 8- photosynthesis
Photosynthesis: using light energy to synthesize carbohydrates
o Light energy to chemical energy AND carbon fixation, CO2C6H12O6
o Past photosynthesis produced fossil fuels
Redox reaction- coupled oxidation and reduction
o Oxidation: if something is oxidized, it loses electrons
Also loses protons
o Reduction: if something is reduced, it gains electrons
Also gains protons
In photosynthesis, the electron donor is water
o H2OO2
Oxidation of water coupled with reduction of CO2
o Equation: CO2 + H2OC6H12O6 + O2
Photosynthesis electron transport chain (PETC)
o Light excited electrons in photosystems 2 and 1
o Electros flo dohill through PETC
o Along the way, ATP and NADPH are produced
o These products of the light reactions are used as the energy source (ATP) and
reducing power to synthesize glucose (reduce CO2 to C6H12O6)
Evolution of photosynthesis
o Evolved first in cyanobacteria
o Ioled…
Horizontal gene transfer- the transfer of genetic material from one
existing cell to another, as opposed to by mating, mitosis, etc.
Endosymbiosis- cyanobacteria (2 types- PS1 and PS2) were taken in by
prokaryotic cells
Chloroplast:
o site where photosynthesis happens
o provides machinery
o contains photosynthesis, providing protection from reactie iterediates
Harmful molecules that are made in the process of photosynthesis but
are then transformed into something non harmful. Chloroplast keeps
them from escaping while they are in the harmful stage.
o Bounded by a double membrane
o Internal membrane (thylakoid)- provides scaffold, order of molecules, and
proton gradient
o Has its own mitochondria and genome with genome expression machinery
o Outer membrane origin: eukaryotic cell that was part of endosymbiant
o Inner membrane origin: the prokaryotic cyanobacteria cell
o Thylakoid membrane origin: the membrane that was inside the cyanobacteria
